A Radical Welcome: Source Code

The Boston Public Quartet and guest artist DeShaun Gordon-King, flute, present Source Code, a program celebrating the music of five landmark women composers from the late romantic period to the present. Jessie Montgomery’s quartet of the same name channels Alvin Ailey, Langston Hughes, and Ella Fitzgerald in a pensive dirge which showcases the core of her musical vernacular. Each following composer captures the essence of their voice within the sounds and rhythms of their piece, and the listener in turn is taken on a journey to decode the sources that are embedded within the experience. We explore French composer Melanie Bonis (who used the pen name “Mel” in order to be published), Boston’s own Amy Beach, Peruvian-American composer Gabriella Lena Frank, Jamaican-British composer Eleanor Alberga OBE and Grammy winner and close friend to the group, Jessie Montgomery.

Joined by DeShaun Gordon-King on flute, the quartet will perform a program celebrating female composers, including Gabriela Lena Frank, an American pianist and composer of contemporary classical music, Mel Bonis, a prolific French late-Romantic composer, Eleanor Alberga OBE, a Jamaican contemporary music composer who lives and works in the United Kingdom, Jessie Montgomery, Musical America’s 2023 Composer of the Year, and Grammy-winning, acclaimed composer, violinist and educator, and Amy Beach, the first successful American female composer of large-scale art music, her “Gaelic” Symphony was premiered by the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1896.

Jessie Montgomery channels Alvin Ailey, Langston Hughes, and Ella Fitzgerald in a dirge which showcases the core of her musical vernacular.

Ticketing Information: All tickets will be Pay What You Can and will be processed through eventbrite. More information on how to purchase tickets will be provided soon.

Source Code: Women Composers

The BPQ presents “Source Code,” a program featuring women composers from the late romantic period to the present. Centered around Jessie Montgomery’s string quartet of the same name, “Source Code” is a representation of each unique voice on the program: French composer Mel Bonis who had to change her name from Melanie in order to get published. Boston’s own Amy Beach, featuring Ellen Hinkle Flute. Peruvian-American composer Gabriella Lena Frank. Jamaican-British composer Eleanor Alberga. And of course Grammy winner Jessie Montgomery. Each composer captures the essence of their experience and culture within the sounds and rhythms of each piece, and the listener in turn is taken on a journey to decode each source that is embedded within the experience.

A Centenary Celebration - Roland Hayes Tribute

A Roland Hayes Tribute, honoring the first African American man to win international acclaim as a concert artist. A tenor, who made his groundbreaking debut with the Boston Symphony Orchestra in November 1923, Hayes was the first Black performer to perform with a major American orchestra as a soloist, and continued to appear regularly with the BSO for the next 21 years, as well as living in Brookline for more than 50 years.

Acclaimed vocalists, tenor Fred VanNess and baritone LaMarcus Miller will perform art songs, arias and spirituals that honor Hayes, alongside the Boston Public Quartet: Betsy Hinkle, violin; Jason Amos, viola; Nicholas Johnson, cello; and Joy Cline Phinney, piano.

In keeping with Classical with a Twist tradition the audience will enjoy light bites and a chance to mix with the artists at intermission.
